Posted Date: 04/17/26 (02:35 PM)

Dear Vashon Island High School and McMurray Middle School Community,

I am pleased to share that, pending School Board approval on April 23, we have selected Ms. Jennifer Olney as our next Assistant Principal and Athletic Director.

Ms. Olney emerged from a rigorous and thoughtful hiring process that included meaningful input from students, staff, and community members. We are grateful to everyone who contributed their time and perspective to this important decision.

While her contract will officially begin on July 1, you may see Ms. Olney on campus during the month of June as she partners with our current administrative team. This transition time will help ensure strong continuity and a supportive handoff in both school leadership and athletics.

Ms. Olney shared the following:
“I am honored to serve as the Assistant Principal and Athletic Director for Vashon Island High School and McMurray Middle School, returning to the community that helped shape who I am today. As a product of Vashon Island, I experienced firsthand the powerful role ‘Pirate Pride’ plays in building character, strengthening work ethic, and developing a deep commitment to teamwork and perseverance. Those experiences continue to guide my passion for supporting students. In this role, I am dedicated to fostering a positive, inclusive school culture while ensuring equitable, meaningful opportunities for all students to grow and succeed.”

Ms. Olney brings more than two decades of classroom teaching experience, along with leadership experience as a high school dean of students in Vancouver, Washington, and most recently as an athletic director and middle school assistant principal in Las Vegas, Nevada.

We are excited to welcome her home to Vashon and look forward to the positive impact she will have on our students, staff, and broader community.

With Pirate Pride,

John Erickson
Principal
